At Health Evolution we are always looking overseas and following the latest health trends and breakthroughs, whether conventional or complimentary. This week we were were delighted and encouraged to read of an American breakthrough with late stage breast cancer.
As reported by the Guardian newspaper, a woman with advanced breast cancer which had spread around her body has been completely cleared of the disease. The groundbreaking therapy harnessed the power of her immune system to fight the tumours. Doctors at the US National Cancer Institute in Maryland, USA successfully treated the woman with a form of immunotherapy that uses the patient’s own immune cells to find and destroy cancer cells that have formed in the body. The therapy wiped out cancer cells so effectively that she has now been free of the disease for two years.
Clinical trials are now needed to see how effective the therapy could be in other cancer patients. Researchers point out that while the treatment could in principle work for many different kinds of cancer, it will not help everyone.
